FBI
LOOKING INTO MONROEVILLE MAN'S
POLICE TASERING, DEATH
PITTSBURGH
-- Allegheny County homicide detectives said early indications
are that Swissvale police were justified in using a Taser to
subdue a man who later died, but the FBI has also decided to
investigate.
The
official cause of death for Andre Thomas, 37, of Monroeville,
is still undetermined, pending results of toxicology tests.
The county medical examiner's office said those results won't
be available for eight to 21 weeks. A spokesman for the FBI's
Pittsburgh office said that the agency is opening a preliminary
investigation into Thomas' death. The FBI declined to
comment further or say which specific aspects of the case will
be under investigation.

WAMO
on-air announcer Ki Ki Brown has left the WAMO building and
is moving on to bigger and better things; and she wanted to
give her listeners the real deal to put rumors to rest.

“It was time to take a new course in life and in my career.
Life is about special courses that we have to take to teach
us how to survive,” said Brown. “Both Sheridan
and I know that it was time for me to take a new course.
The doors were always open for me to ask any question and I
received a lot of support when I had ideas and wanted to venture
off into different areas of my career.
“This
new course in my life and career involves learning more about
me and my capabilities, learning how to deal with difficult
people and difficult situations; those are surprises quizzes,”
Brown said. “Hopefully, I will graduate and become the
next music director and/or program director for a major market
station. But I have more to learn.”

to supporters at the event. People

East Liberty at 208 N. Highland Avenue.
Over
400 supporters came out to be trained on how to canvass
the streets and get people to register to vote for Barack Obama.
Door
to door knocking and canvassing certain organizations and
other places were the premise of this canvass. Two people were

A Hill District woman was found not guilty of disorderly
conduct stemming from a traffic stop in Shadyside that nearly
spiraled out of control last year, when a police officer drew
his weapon on her while three children were in the vehicle.
Common
Pleas Judge Anthony M. Mariani found Pamela D. Lawton, 37, guilty
of all other charges in the case, including vehicle code
violations that led to her being pulled over Aug. 26, 2006,
on Kentucky Avenue near Negley Avenue. All
of the charges were summary offenses in a nonjury trial that

2007 and because Carl is always involving and getting new projects,
we waited until now to publish it.

To me I became interested by God instilling the talent in
me as well as it being a craft I enjoy doing that makes me happy.

On "The Wire" my job was to guard the drug shipment
coming in from The Greeks that was to supply the CO-OP with
their re-up.

How did get a part on "The Wire"?

HOMEGOING CELEBRATION OF GWENDOLYN JUNE CAMPBELL ELLIOT
By Staff Writer Ashley G. Woodson
May
18, 2007 - The founder of Gwen's Girls and the first
African American Police Commander, Gwen Elliot, was laid to
rest May 17, 2007.
Funeral services were held at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church with
Reverend Joan Prentice as the officiant. Back in the late
80's ,I had the pleasure of meeting Gwen years ago and I will
miss her very much. My family owned a business called "Vera
and Rick's Lounge" in the Hill District and Gwen was their
quite often for lunch. She always kepted it real with me and
I am glad that I knew her personally.
She
paved the way for many woman to reach goals that were not able
to be met years ago. Along with being the first African
American Police Commander, her greatest achievements involved
her struggle to make crimes against women and children, priorities
in the police department. After retiring from the Pittsburgh
Bureau of Police, Elliot founded Gwen's Girls (www.gwensgirls.org)
--as she recognized there was a lack of understanding for the
complexity of the needs of at-risk, and that existing services
fell short of meeting these gender-specific needs. Family,
friends, community leaders, Pittsburgh police officers and other
law enforcement officers came out to pay their respect to Gwen.
Everyone
had something powerful to say about "Gwendolyn June Campell

PITTSBURGHER'S REINVENTED
By Karen Bryant for Pop City Magazine

MAY
9, 2007 - Throughout its history, Pittsburgh has reinvented
itself. The region has enjoyed great wealth, survived dire
downturns and created amazing new comebacks and opportunities.
How? Strong, determined and creative people. As Pittsburgh
continues to transform, the people behind the city make the
difference. Pop City takes a look at four Pittsburghers who
have reinvented themselves and in the process, are helping to
reinvent our region.
Ashley
Woodson, Founder and President of Brotha
Ash Productions - Ashley Woodsons
reinvention serves as a reminder of the unmet potential in all
of us. As he explains it, he was sidetracked by the streets
for awhile, like too many African American youth. But Woodson
would rather focus on how he turned his life around ten years
ago and how that is paying off for Pittsburgh.
K.J. Bryant

Command
Operations and Protection Services (COPS) presented legendary
hip hip artist DMC to Pittsburgh to speak with adopted and foster

at the Greater Pittsburgh Coliseum for the "Down With The
King Cabaret". We know about the DMC the artist, but
he wants everyone to know Darryl McDaniels, the man who recently
found out he was adopted in 2001 at the age of 35, the man who
has a new album and a new lease on life. Realizing his purpose
and destiny McDaniels decided to make it possible for those
less fortunate children without parents to have a life changing
experience. McDaniels and his fellow adoptee Sheila Jaffe have
started Camp Felix through our Foundation, The Felix Organization
to send children without parents to camp. I had the pleasure
of interviewing and hanging out with DMC for two days in a row.
First I interviewed him at CJ's in the Strip, he spoke with
the children at Second Chance in Homewood, and he performed
The Greater Pittsburgh Coliseum. After the initial interview
we sat in his car and listened to a few tracks from his latest
CD. We also went to Arts across the street from CJ's
for diehard fans to take photos and get autographs. It was plain
to see from the beginning that DMC was a changed man from the
experiences of his adoption. He was focused on the children
of the world and how he could help.

COALITION
TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT PLAN OF ACTION
DECLARES TIME FOR TALK IS PAST
By
C. Denise Johnson
For The New Pittsburgh Courier
Kay
Bey (aka Da Button Pusha) puts an arm around 14-year-old
Michael Turner after his comments during a call to
stop the violence last week at Hill House.
For
Black teens and young adults in the United States, homicide is
the leading cause of death. Unfortunately, this is not news
to Pittsburgh. Last year there were 95 homicides in Allegheny
County, 75 of those involved Blacks. In 2005, there were a
total of 97 homicides. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania holds
the dubious distinction of having the highest rate of Black on
Black homicides in the nation.
The
escalating level of violence in Black communities prompted an
unprecedented gathering of community and grassroots organizations
and activists to declare that the time for talk has past. "White
people are not killing us. We
are killing us," said Tim Stevens,
head of the Black Political Empowerment Project and an organizer
of what was basically a call to action meeting held last Thursday
at the Hill House on Centre Avenue.

event drew a cross section of the Black community along with movers
and shakers of the hip-hop recording industry, and both participants
and spectators left energized and optimistic for the future of
Pittsburghs hip-hop talent.

THE
COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER
TO SUPPORT MS. PAM LAWTON
By
Staff Writer Ashley G. Woodson
For Brotha Ash
Productions
October
13, 2006 at 7:50pm at the Municipal Building, Ms. Pamela
Lawton was fingerprinted for disorderly conduct. Before she
was fingerprinted there was a rally of more 70 people that came
out to show Mrs. Lawton that she was not alone. Even though
this was a community effort, a few members of the ONE
HOOD COALITION were the organizers
for the rally: Minister Jasiri X, Cornell Jones, Darnell Drewery,
Paradise Gray, and Khari Mosley. Organizations, politicians,
and the general public both black and white came out and spoke
on her behalf.

BUTTON PUSHA SPEAKS
OUT!!!
Peace
all - I would first like to applaud all of the Brothers and Sisters
who came out to support Ms. Lawton yesterday at the rally.
All of our efforts should not go in vain. We must continue to
support each and every cause that will allow us to stand as one
unit and fight against oppression. However, honestly, I am disgusted
and downright outraged over the lack of support by the "HIP
HOP" Community. The actions of the police is what we as
so-called "hip-hoppers" say we speak out against in
our music , yet when the opportunity comes to raise up and stand
- the "hip-hoppers" were in short supply. This has
to end. I am sick of hearing people are down for the "hip
hop movement" yet, I fail to see the appearance of the soldiers.
This should not be tolerated. If you are truly down for the "movement"
- get MOVING!!!! - Any one of us could have been Ms. Lawton.
Why does it take the victim to be "you" before "
you " stand up and do and/or say something. HIP HOP and the
prilviage of being able to use the micophone as tools are a blessing
-but it doesn't stop with a song!!!!

MAYOR
BOB O'CONNER PASSES AWAY
REST IN PEACE
(1944-2006)
Brotha
Ash Productions wants to take this
time to extend our condolences to the O'Conner family. September
1, 2006 at 8:55pm Mayor
Bob O'Conner's battle with cancer came to an end. Months
ago we found out the tragic news that O'Conner was diagnosed with
cancer. It was very apparent that something was wrong when he
did not show up for the All Star games a few months back. Everyone
was hoping that he would be able to fight the disease, but sadly
he could not.
Eighteen
years ago, Pittsburgh faced the same dilemna with Mayor Richard
Caliguiri. The city was very sad and it took a while for Pittsburgh
to bounce back. Once again, our thoughts and prayers go out to
the O'Conner family.
He
was a great man, leader and friend who will be missed.

This quintet of life-long friends, Darrell Jefferson, Sterling
Copeland, Bey Johnson, Marquise McCrommon and Vinnie Booth, blend
harmonies and hip-hop into a unique mix of R&B.

JUST PRESSIN' BUTTONS

By
Ashley G. Woodson
For
The New Pittsburgh Courier
In
the generally male-dominated hip-hop industry a female shot-caller
is a rarity and even more so in Pittsburgh, but flying in the
face of convention isnt unusual for Kay Bey (better
known as Da Button Pusha).
Bey is the CEO and founder of Just Pressin
Buttons, Inc., a locally-owned hip-hop production company.
Although best recognized as a sound-spinner and entertainer, she
doesnt want any confusion as to what she is about.
I am a MC, producer and business woman, but I am not
a rapper, explained Bey. There is a big difference
between a rapper and an MC. A rapper talks about anything to make
a buck while a true MC writes and flows about real issues and
can do it well. We make truth music from the soul whether you
like it or not....read

Steelers
replace Antwaan Randle El with
Ohio State Buckeyes Santonio Holmes
By BAP
Sports Analysist Smokin Jim Frazier
The
defending Super Bowl Champions added a couple, more, shorter,
undersize 5-foot-10 inch receivers. Santonio Holmes, who reminds
me of Indianapolis Colts All-Pro receiver Marvin Harrison, has
a chance to develop into a Great player!
Santonio
Holmes will wear jersey number#10, Kordell Stewarts old
number. Holmes likes to pull his hair back into a Pony-Tail,
so I would suggest no Joy Riding through Schenley
Park. On
my radio show I took a lot of heat because I gave the Steelers
a D or BELOW AVERAGE grade on their
draft.
The
Steelers traded away their second round draft pick. NOT
GOOD. In the third round they drafted a 190 pound safety
that runs like he weighs 350 pounds. Anthony Smith, from Syracuse,
only runs the fort |
