THE
MARY L. STONE BLACK COLLEGE TOUR JUNE
20-27, 2010
PRESENTED BY THE KINGSLEY
ASSOCIATION
APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR THE 2010 TOUR IS MARCH 1, 2010
With
the continued focus on improving the educational outcomes
for African-American high school students, organizers
of the Pittsburgh area’s original tour of Historically
Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) have scheduled
the 2010 spring tour for June
20 - 27, 2010.
The dramatic shift away from the traditional Easter
week program of the past twenty-eight years was made
in order to both support and promote the test preparation
of students on the mandated PSSA statewide achievement
tests that will be administered in early spring. With
the adoption of a statewide testing schedule, students
and faculty alike will be preparing in the weeks before
Easter for this important measure of student accomplishment.

Martin
Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April
4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist and prominent
leader in the American civil rights movement.
His main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights
in the United States, and he has become a human rights
icon: King is recognized as a martyr by two Christian
churches. A Baptist minister, King became a civil rights
activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery
Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first
president. King's efforts led to the 1963 March
on Washington, where King delivered his "I
Have a Dream" speech. CLICK

On
behalf of the National Urban League,
its Board of trustrees and Affilates, our thoughts and
prayers go out to the people of Haiti as they cope with
the effects of the devastating earthquake that has taken
so many lives and destroyed so many communities. We
are distressed by the images of death and destruction
in the wake of the horrific disaster. We commend President
Obama for the way in which the United States has responded
to this crisis so far. When disasters like this occur,
as in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina struck this country,
the National Urban League movement came together to
assist in the relief effort and provide support to those
in dire need.
As
the recovery and relief efforts get underway in Haiti,
we recommend the following: 1) As
we have assessed the best way to assist in the relief
effort in these first critical hours
and days, we have advised that CASH DONATIONS
are the most efficient and effective way to help the
relief efforts in Haiti right now. The National Urban
League urges everyone to donate to the Haiti Support
Project's Haiti Relief Fund at www.ibw21.org
or you can donate to a reputable organization of your
choice. You can go to www.whitehouse.gov/HaitiEarthquake
to determine an organization to contribute to. Please
contribute what you can as soon as possible. 2)
The United States must take the lead in a comprehensive
plan for the reconstruction and rebuilding of Haiti,
like the Marshall Plan, to ensure that the physical
infrastructive and human lives are permanently rebuilt.
3) The
United States should grant Temporary Protected Status
(TPS) forthe 30,000 Haitians currently under threat
of deportation. The National Urban League and its affiliates
in over 100 communities throughout the United States
stand ready to assist in the relief efforts to help
the people of Haiti recover from this terrible disaster.
We will issue further statements and updates on an on
going basis. For more information visit www.nul.org

CHRISTIAN
HIP-HOP ARTIST DEVOTES LIFE MUSIC TO GOD Written by Ashley G. Woodson
For the New Pittsburgh Courier
Melvin
Jones aka Mele Mel, the Poet Prophet, won a national
contest that featured the hottest gospel artists from
across the country.
The
contest is called Holy Culture Radio
and is the foundation of Christian hip-hop music. It
is the equivalent of Source Magazine for secular music.
Jones heard about the contest called the “Break
Out.” They were searching for the next
Christian hip-hop star with potential to break out and
do big things. A lot of the details about the contest
are promotional, but they also give you a distribution
deal. The person who entered a particular song will
get to distribute that song through a promotional company.
It
was a great honor to attend the 14th
Annual Ronald H. Brown Leadership Awards Gala
at the Westin Convention Center Hotel in Downtown Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh's elite showed to be honored and
this event was presented by the Urban League of Pittsburgh.
Esther
Bush, who is the President and CEO,
greeted everyone with class and style when they arrived.
WTAE News anchor Andrew Stockey was the host of the
event. There was great music and food and an auction.

LATIN
HIP-HOP DUO MANO Y MANO
STEPS TO NEXT LEVEL WITH NEW CD
By Ashley G. Woodson for the New Pittsburgh
Courier
In
the beginning there was Sossa
Smooth, a young eager emcee who first
stepped in the booth at the age of 13 and recorded his
first song. Then there was J-Kruz,
who was inspired by his younger brother to pursue a
career in rap music and together they make up the most
diverse group that Pittsburgh has ever heard called
Mano Y Mano.

A
REQUEST FROM BROTHA
ASH
CAN WE ALL JUST GET ALONG IN 2010?
I
usually don't get caught up in New Year's resolutions, but I do
want to share what my goal is for 2010. I would like for us as
a black race to come together to be strong, black and proud of who
we are. That is only possible if we come together. Is
it possible for us as a black race to pull together, bury the past,
work together, and just get along - YES IT IS!!!
If we come together and stop
hatin on each other, stop killing
each other, stop talking about
each other (well, that may be asking for too much), and most
important stop
being "CRABS IN A BARREL", we can achieve anything
as long as we do it TOGETHER. Brotha
Ash Productions is taking a stand and
putting it out there for all of our beautiful black people to make
the effort in 2010 to make this happen. We will continue to
do our part by sharing our rich heritage and being there for the
African American community to the fullest, but we are reaching out
to you, (the community and other black organizations) to let you
know that we want and need your help. It is possible and it is a
reality. We are stronger together than apart.
If
you have any ideas on our we can make this happen, please send it
to BlackUnity@BrothaAshProductions.com
because we want to make a difference in our communities. We
will post your comments for everyone to see.
For those of you who are caught up in haters being against you,
remember what God has for you, no MAN or WOMAN can take from you.
Help
us bring our race BLACK TOGETHER one person at a time.
DO
YOU KNOW MAJOR TAYLOR?
In
the late 1890's bicycle races drew crowds that filled Madison Square
Garden; the biggest draw of all was Marshall W. "Major"
Taylor. Having become the undisputed black champion of America.
Taylor overcame racial segregation and intolerance to become to
one-mile sprint world champion in 1898, and by the end of 1899 held
seven world cycling records!
Why
is this important? The University of Pittsburgh's Center for Minority health and
Adventure Cycling Association share the goal of encouraging people
from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds, including African
Americans, to explore the landscapes and history of America by
bicycle. That is why these two organizations are committed
to creating an Underground Railroad Bicycle Route. Throughout
history black people have used bicycles as a mode of transportation.
Both Major Taylor and the Underground Railroad represent the struggle
to freedom from slavery and the challenge to elimate racial and
ethnic health disparities. Visit the Center for Minority Health
