SCRAP NEXT LOCAL HIP-HOP ARTIST TO GO NATIONAL
By Ashley G. Woodson for the New Pittsburgh Courier
Originally
from Penn Hills, John Wilson, also known as hip-hop
artist Mista Scrap, is Pittsburgh’s next artist
to break out and become a national artist.
He has been on the hip-hop music scene since he was
nine years old and has not looked back since. He was
inspired by Run DMC and Cool J and other legends in
the game from back in the day. Wilson’s
music is about life because he keeps it real and creates
his own style. He raps about things that he
has been through. He takes it seriously and it is not
a joke. He also taught his son and younger brother to
rap....read

JAZZ FRIDAYS BRINGS CLASS AND SOPHISTICATION
TO PITTSBURGH AT THE HOLIDAY’S INN AT BRIDGES
LOUNGE
By Ashley G. Woodson for the New Pittsburgh Courier
Shawn
Hopson, Charles Carter and Warren Wilson formed
the group called Club Duo
to bring the community together with a sophisticated
and classy event called Smooth
Jazz Fridays. This event is held each
first Friday of the month at the Holiday Inn in Oakland.
Line dancing, a deejay and a live band make up the itinerary
for this event. The live bands range from jazz to hip-hop
and R&B music. Fifteen years ago Shawn Hopson and
his partners decided to do a First Friday’s event
at the Braddock Hills Holiday Inn. In the beginning
it was a deejay and a jazz band. The deejay played on
one floor while the jazz band was on another floor.
It was a nice flow because it gave people options to
hear jazz, hip-hop or R&B.... read

VILLAGE REUNION TO CONTINUE IN SPITE OF DEMOLITION
Written by Ashley G. Woodson for the
New Pittsburgh Courier
Old
friends and families who grew up in the St. Clair
Village Community gathered for the 16th annual St.
Clair Village reunion July 16-18. The reunion
started in 1995 because of the close- knit neighborhood.
Lou Shealey, president of the St. Clair Village
Committee, will keep the reunion going along with
his committee members as long as there is breath in
his body. He moved to St. Clair Village in
1954 and moved out in 1967. St. Clair Village was
built in October 1953. It was once a thriving neighborhood
with families who were very close. It wasn’t
until recent years that crime took a toll on the neighborhood
and reduced it to a high crime area. With the Pittsburgh
Housing Authority demolishing the housing complex,
it will be nothing but a memory for the former residents....read

JONNY
GAMMAGE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP WILL BE AWARDED AT
THE PITTSBURGH NAACP'S SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON ON JULY
27
THIS YEAR'S WINNER IS
MICHELLE COKER
CONGRATULATIONS FROM BROTHA
ASH PRODUCTIONS, LLC
The
Black and White Reunion was established in 1996 in response
to the death of black motorist Jonny
Gammage while in police custody and the unacceptable
not-guilty verdicts at the trials of the perpetrators. One of the organization's most important projects
is the Jonny Gammage Memorial Scholarship to support
local students studying the law.Applicants
write an essay about civil rights and police accountability. This year's winner, Michelle
Coker, will begin her legal training at the University
of Wisconsin Law School-Madison in the fall.
She was an intern and a citizen monitor for the Regional
Equity Monitoring Project.
In
her own words: When I thought about what
to write to address legal changes needed to minimize
police brutality, I was inspired by Billie Holiday's
"Strange Fruit." I rewrote it as "Urban
Streets Bear Strange Fruit" with the spirit of
our connectional heritage and struggle in America and
my desire for justice that every human on the globe
deserves. Writing this essay helped me to remember why
I first wanted to be a lawyer. Lawyers should use their
role to be the voice of integrity and dignity in our
society and the power to influence American culture
to strive for equality for all from corporate law to
public interest.
Ms.
Coker received her award at the NAACP's Scholarship Luncheon
on Tuesday, July 27 at the University of Pittsburgh.
The Black and White Reunion has presented the scholarship,
since its inception, in collaboration with the NAACP Pittsburgh
Branch. This year, BWR is pleased to announce a partnership
with the Negro Educational Emergency Drive , which has
graciously added $1,000; the scholarship now totals $3,000.
NEED now handles much of the administration and promotion
of the Jonny Gammage Scholarship.
Most
money for the Jonny Gammage Scholarship is raised through
the registration fee for the Summit Against Racism,
held annually at East Liberty Presbyterian Church on
the Saturday after Martin Luther King Day. Next year's
Summit Against Racism will be on Saturday, January 22.
Registration and workshop information will be available
soon at www.blackandwhitereunion.org
and in the next issue of the Thomas Merton Center 's
newspaper, The New People.

A
REQUEST FROM BROTHA
ASH
CAN WE ALL JUST GET ALONG IN 2010?
I
usually don't get caught up in New Year's resolutions,
but I do want to share what my goal is for 2010. I
would like for us as a black race to come together to
be strong, black and proud of who we are. That is only
possible if we come together. Is
it possible for us as a black race to pull together, bury
the past, work together, and just get along - YES IT IS!!!
If we come together and stop
hatin on each other, stop
killing each other, stop
talking about each other (well, that may be asking for
too much), and most important stop
being "CRABS IN A BARREL", we can achieve
anything as long as we do it TOGETHER. Brotha
Ash Productions is taking
a stand and putting it out there for all of our beautiful
black people to make the effort in 2010 to make this happen.
We will continue to do our part by sharing our rich heritage
and being there for the African American community to
the fullest, but we are reaching out to you, (the community
and other black organizations) to let you know that we
want and need your help. It is possible and it is a reality.
We are stronger together than apart.
If
you have any ideas on our we can make this happen, please
send it to BlackUnity@BrothaAshProductions.com
because we want to make a difference in our communities.
We
will post your comments for everyone to see.
For those of you who are caught up in haters being against
you, remember what God has for you, no MAN or WOMAN
can take from you. Help
us bring our race BLACK TOGETHER one person at a time.
DO
YOU KNOW MAJOR TAYLOR?
In
the late 1890's bicycle races drew crowds that filled Madison
Square Garden; the biggest draw of all was Marshall W. "Major"
Taylor. Having become the undisputed black champion
of America. Taylor overcame racial segregation and intolerance
to become to one-mile sprint world champion in 1898, and
by the end of 1899 held seven world cycling records!
Why
is this important? The University of Pittsburgh's Center for Minority
health and Adventure Cycling Association share the goal
of encouraging people from all walks of life and cultural
backgrounds, including African Americans, to explore the
landscapes and history of America by bicycle. That
is why these two organizations are committed to creating
an Underground Railroad Bicycle Route. Throughout history
black people have used bicycles as a mode of transportation.
Both Major Taylor and the Underground Railroad represent
the struggle to freedom from slavery and the challenge
to elimate racial and ethnic health disparities. Visit
