EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS FROM
BROTHA ASH PRODUCTIONS

Brotha Ash was EVERYWHERE covering news and entertainment as usual. My good friend Dr. Goddess is very busy making sure that my neighborhood, "The Hill District" does not get any casinos. Dr. Ellis recently held a rally at Freedom Corner which had a great turnout. She has also made a public appearance at Grace Memorial Church to talk about, "The Corner on Which I Stand: Malicious Intent". Dr. Goddess addressed her purpose for organizing the campaign, concerns surrounding the gambling industry, specific effects upon urbanites, African Americans and Hill residents, in particular, and the overall effect of gambling upon the city of Pittsburgh and the State of Pennsylvania. The second event I covered was Activist Angela Davis receiving the Thomas Morton Award. It was an honor and privilege to meet such a distinguished black woman. She gave the crowd food for thought on how to take charge of our own destiny and much more. It was a learning lesson for all in attendance. The third event I covered was the Hip Hop Buffet Series presented by JPB Productions at the Shadow Lounge in East Liberty. This show was different and unique because it featured Veteran Hip Hop Artist from the 'Burgh. Minister Jasiri X, Classic 1824 (RXC), Official, Omar Abdul and Da Button Pusha were just a few who rocked the mic and made history. Finally, I have to give a big shoutout to our BAP Staff Coordinator, Deborah "DIVA' Stroman for winning Monique's Full and Fabulous Contest back in October. The 30/30 Club in Homewood honored her with a celebration that brought everyone out for a great time. They also included Brotha Ash as a part of the celebration for escorting the DIVA to Monique's show.

BROTHA ASH PRODUCTIONS NIGHT AT CARMEN JONES
WAS A HUGE SUCCESS

Everyone came out on Brotha Ash Productions Night to see Carmen Jones. I want to thank the Opera Theatre of Pittsburgh for asking Brotha Ash to be a "Celebrity Guest" on the closing night of the play. I also want to thank the cast and crew for being very helpful during rehearsals. We had many people sign up for our newsletter and we had folks from Virginia come to our booth to inform us that they appreciate Brotha Ash Productions because we keep them abreast of what's happenin' in the 'Burgh. They also asked for my autograph, which was very nice. The play was phenomemonal and the cast party was off the chain. Big shoutouts to my family and friends for coming to support me, Sarah, Jonathan, Albert Lee, Denise Sheffey as "Carmen" (picture with Brotha Ash), Etta Cox, Kevin Brown, Hakim Rasheed, Eugene Perry and the cast and crew. I had a great time and I couldn't have done it without you.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE FOR
GERALD LEVERT

November 17, 2006 was the memorial service for R&B singer Gerald Levert. It was held in Cleveland, Ohio, which is Levert's hometown, at the Music Hall. Thousands of loyals fans stood in line to pay their respects to Levert. Close friends and family members were also in attendance. Usher, Jermaine Dupri, Keith Sweat, Johnny Gill, Tyler Perry, Angela Wimbush and Veteran Journalist Ed Gordon (picture with Brotha Ash), were just a few of the celebrities that came out to pay homage to Levert.

Sean Levert, Gerald's younger brother said, "I'm not supposed to tell you this, but Gerald thought of himself as the 'Black Elvis'." Under the circumstances, the family seemed to be holding up well. The memorial service was more of a concert than a funeral. Johny Gill and Keith Sweat sang their songs from "LSG" and the R&B Group - Men At Large tore the house down with their hits. The service lasted from 12pm - 3pm and it was not a sad occasion, but a celebration of Gerald Levert's life. You can view the program right here (pdf. file)

KATT WILLIAMS AKA MONEY MIKE AND FRIENDS

SATURDAY, July 29, 2006 I had the opportunity to check out Comedians Katt Williams aka Money Mike and friends Lunelle, Red Grant and Melanie Camacho. The show was great from beginning to end. My stomach was sore after the show was over from laughing so hard. Mocha "The Big Body Benz" was off the hook as the host and Red was the MC throughout the show doing what he does best - tell jokes. Money Mike ended the show by talking about who else "Michael Jackson" and had left audience in stitches. Most of us went to the After Party at Dowe's on 9th and got our dance on and had a great time. The celebrities also showed up in VIP to see their fans.

BIG SHOUTOUTS: John "Jay Dub" of Groove Productions, Mocha, DJ Schizo, Bob Lawson, Money Mike (pictured left with me, Brotha Ash), Lunelle, Red, Melanie, Ira, and all who came out and kicked it.

WAMO Summer Jam 2006 was one of the best events I've been to in quite sometime. From beginning to end it was one great adventure after another. When I arrived, Yung Joc took the stage and ripped the mike without fail. The crowd was going so crazy that the show had to be stopped for a second to get everyone back in line. Shawna, Ray J, and Marques Houston followed with their sets which were phenomenal as well. Then along comes Lil Scrappy who gave one of the best performances of the Summer Jam. This young hip hop star really knows how to capture an audience. The crowd was so hyped when he performed his smash hit "No Problem" that it was a rap after that. Scrappy's crew had bottles of water that drenched the first few rows of the audience, and yes I got wet for the cause too. Unlike the other acts, Scrappy mingled, signed autographs, tooks pictures and talked with fans after his performance. Finally, the head-liner, T.I. aka "King of the South", took the stage and gave the fans just what they were looking for - a great show. He performed one hit after another and said, "I came from having nothing and I am grateful for all of your support". He continued, "People want to know why I call myself the king? Because I want to." During the whole event, WAMO had control of the crowd so things did not get of out hand. BIG SHOUTOUTS: Emmai Alaquiva, Ron Davenport, Jr., Tammy Sadler, Laura Varner-Norman, KiKi (thanks for the shoutout), Anji, DJ Boogie, Blakk Steel, Nick-Nice, J-Kruz, Nesia Beatz, Pittsburgh's R&B Sensations CRAVE, T.I, Marques Houston (pictured left with Brotha Ash), Ray J. and Lil Scrappy (thanks for the photos) and to all the WAMO staff for showing Brotha Ash Productions much love.

AN EVENING WITH SPIKE LEE
by BAP Staff Writer Ashley G. Woodson

February 16, 2006, the African American Cultural Center presented "An Evening with Spike Lee". Anji, WAMO's morning show DJ, hosted the event. We watched snippets of his films, and then Spike came out joking about how the Steelers won. The lecture was a biographical picture of Spike's life as well as food for thought on how to live out your own dreams. He was funny, serious and always on point. He informed us of how he was not sure what he wanted to do with his life until attended college. There was a question and answer period at the end of the show, which was hilarious at times and then we went to the African American Cultural Center to visit with Spike. From the beginning of his film career with "She's Gotta Have it" to his current film "She Hate Me" coming out this summer, the outspoken film director, actor has become a legend in his 20 years of being in the business. We thank everyone from the African American Cultural Center for bringing this event to Pittsburgh. Shout outs to Heather Clark, Spike Lee, Anji, DJ Supa C, Nathan James, Soulsis, D.L. MAHALIA JACKSON: STANDING ON HOLY GROUND
WAS A GREAT SUCCESS

This event ran from Jan. 26-Feb. 11 at Alumni Hall in Oakland. Terri Bridgett not only played the part of Mahalia Jackson, but she was Mahalia throughout the play. Her presence on stage was remarkable as she belted out songs of praise from Mahalia's gospel collection. This was an evening of storytelling and praise and worship. The entire cast was fantastic, but there was one actor/singer who stood out from all the rest and her name is Melissa Wilborn. Missy as she is affectionately known by family and friends, was born blind but that has only proven to be an impediment for all others. She tore the house down when it was time to sing. She is definitely one of the best soul singers that I've heard in a long time. Shoutouts to Dr. Vernell Lillie, Eileen Morris, Iris, Jewel and everyone from the Kuntu Repertory Theatre.
